The Bayeux Tapestry $104.93 A new edition of a classic book: the complete Bayeux Tapestry in color with an introduction, description, and commentary by a leading authority on the period. In a museum in the small town of Bayeux in Normandy, specially devised to hold this single object, is a strip of linen nearly one thousand years old. It is 230 feet long and about 20 inches high. On it, embroidered in brightly colored wool, are figures of men, animals, buildings, and ships. In a series of vivid scenes, with a running explanatory text in Latin, it relates the invasion of England by William of Normandy and his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.Nothing remotely like the Bayeux Tapestry exists anywhere in the world, yet comparatively few people have been to Bayeux to see it and appreciate how totally absorbing it is. This book, first published in 1985, reproduces the Tapestry in full color and makes it accessible as never before. The story told in the Tapestry has all the ingredients of an epic poem, and a cast of characters that includes King Edward the Confessor; his liegeman, Duke Harold; and William, Duke of Normandy. When Edward dies, Harold succeeds him as king. William, who has a better dynastic claim, invades England, and at the Battle of Hastings Harold is defeated and killed. Here the Tapestry breaks off, but it probably originally concluded with William's coronation—the beginning of a sequence of monarchs that has continued virtually unbroken until today, and of the English nation as we know it.The Tapestry is reproduced in full color over 146 pages, with captions on a fold-out page for easy reference. A second reproduction of the Tapestry in black and white has a detailed accompanying commentary. Sir David Wilson, former Director of the British Museum, provides an up-to-date summary of the historical evidence, explaining each episode and covering related topics such as the costumes, armor, ships, buildings, and customs. One of the primary sources... |

Tapestry of Webs $13.58 Past Lives’ debut album Tapestry of Webs had high expectations swirling around it, and not just because the band featured the half of the Blood Brothers who didn’t become Jaguar Love (Jordan Blilie, Morgan Henderson and Mark Gajadhar). With the addition of former Shoplifting guitarist Devin Welch and production by Steve Fisk, a lot of heavyweight names in the Pacific Northwest experimental rock/punk scene were affiliated with the project. That makes the downright melodic catchiness of Tapestry of Webs’ opening track “Paralyzer” -- which chugs along like a long-lost Cars track -- that much more surprising (and a pretty punk statement, in its own way). The band spends the first half of the album defying any other expectations fans might have about Past Lives being Blood Brothers 2.0. “Past Lives” makes the most of the oddly introspective quality to Blilie’s voice, draping it over surreal phrases like “birthmark to the burning witch” and surrounding it with choral backing vocals, while “At Rest” takes the band into slow, spacious territory they never would have explored in their previous incarnation. However, Past Lives’ approach still has a few roots in their past life. Given that the Blood Brothers’ rhythm section formed the group, it’s not a total shock that Tapestry of Webs boasts sturdier, more prominent grooves and structures; likewise, Blilie’s voice was always the implosive cool to Johnny Whitney’s white-hot shrieks. Many of these songs have an undeniably poppy feel that is also largely uncharted territory for Past Lives' members, even if they're delivered with more force than many indie bands could muster. “Vanishing Twin”'s grind makes a nice contrast to its lilting melody, “Falling Spikes”' saxophone-driven dance-punk is equally weird and catchy, and “Don't Let the Ashes Fill Your Eyes” reveals an odd surf fetish, with tremolo guitars and warped Beach Boys harmonies. Past Lives don't get around to unleashing their full fury until Tapestry of Webs' second half, when they serve up a streak of songs that are nearly as fiery as the Blood Brothers used to be, like the brash and brassy “Hex Takes Hold” and “K Hole,” which spans moments of dead calm and some very convincing yelps from Blilie. Though it's a little perverse for the band to bury its explosive moments, it proves that there's more to Past Lives than rehashing the Blood Brothers' legacy. They're still finding their footing on Tapestry of Webs, but they're going interesting places. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi |

Celtic Tapestry: Contemporary & Traditional $17.99 The two discs that comprise Celtic Tapestry have been assembled from the vaults of Maggie's Music, a label focusing on what commentators have referred to "chamber folk." What is chamber folk? One enjoyable example is Bonnie Rideout's "Miss Gordon of Park/ Craigellachie Lassies/The Honourable Mrs. Drummond of Perth's Delight." A lead fiddle, backed by light accompaniment, weaves a series of instrumental pieces together seamlessly. The small ensemble delivers these instrumentals so gently, pleasantly, that it would be quite easy to imagine these selections slipped between two classical quartets during an evening concert. Many other artists follow a similar route on Celtic Tapestry. The majority of the selections are instrumental, interspersed with a handful of vocals including Ceoltoiri's "Killarney Boyus of Pleasure/Oro 'Se Do" and Amy White's "Lagan Love." The operative word, whether speaking of the Celtic style or the 32 selections on these discs, is "tapestry," because the beauty of the collection is built upon the careful arrangements of individual songs and instrumentals as well as the way everything ebbs and flows together. While Karen Ashbrook's "Curlew/Green Hills of Tyrol" is distinctive from Robin Bullock's "The Rakes of Clonmel/The Trip to the Cottage," it also serves to prepare the way for it. Placing both of Celtic Tapestry's discs in the player, then, is a lot like listening to a relaxing, two-hour radio show without commercials. For listeners who enjoy the lighter side of Celtic music, Celtic Tapestry is an agreeable, well-assembled collection. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr. |

The problem with ‘Soweto’
IN his seminal work, The Souls of Black Folk, W. E. B. du Bois, the African-American writer and human rights activists, asked “how does it feel to be a problem?”
